This is the time of year when our skin goes from glowing and dewy to pale and dry. Every time the environment changes, we must change with it. I didn’t knew this until I realized that my skin would break out and become extremely dry in the beginning of winter. After I came to the conclusion that the cold weather was to blame, I rushed to find solutions to cure that dryness and paleness. Without further ado, here are my amazing winter skin care tips that allowed me to shine all year long!
Tip #1: No More Hot Showers
You would think a hot shower after a cold day would be the key to keeping your skin moisturized but that could not be further from the truth. Washing your body with hot water, in general, is terrible. Why, you ask? The hot water dries out our skin even more which strips away all of our natural oils. Solution: Opt for lukewarm water instead (including when you wash your hands and face).
Tip #2: Invest in a humidifier
Cold weather creates dry air which is not good for our skin. To prevent the air in your home from becoming TOO dry, a humidifier is your best choice. I personally chose this one from Amazon which works like a charm and doesn’t break the bank.
Perks: super quiet AND has a built in nightlight!
Tip #3: Different Cleanser
Try to avoid using cleansers with salicylic acid which tend to dry out the skin. Instead, choose a cleanser with hyaluronic acid that nourishes and hydrates the skin. Try this one from Amazon which keeps my skin clear and healthy year-round. This face wash was designed for dry skin AND is fragrance-free, which is very important. Be careful not to buy the foaming facial wash as I have found dries out my skin much faster. Make sure it says HYDRATING.
Tip #4: Apply Body Butter Immediately After A Shower
Body butter is known to be thicker which means it provides an ADDITIONAL barrier that protects our skin from the damaging effects from the cold. The most common is Shea butter mostly because it includes many vitamins beneficial to our skin. Did I also mention it leaves your skin way softer than any regular lotion? Apply the body butter immediately after a shower while the skin is still wet. Why? It’s easier to lock in moisture due to the fact that this is when your skin is the most moisturized.
Tip #5: Apply Hydrating Moisturizer
Like mentioned before, aim to moisturize while the face is still damp to trap the moisture. Start off with a nice hyaluronic acid serum and then lather on your favorite moisturizer. It is normal to change moisturizers depending on the season; however, with trial and error, I have found that this moisturizer and this one are the most dependable. They are both extremely lightweight, contain hyaluronic acid and they leave the skin super soft and moisturized!

Tip #6: Exfoliate Less
Exfoliating can be both good and bad.
Good: evens out skin tone, removes dead skin cells, assists in anti-aging, etc.
Bad: If done too many times, can dry out the skin, cause skin irritation, etc.
Exfoliate gently and no more than twice a week. You’ll see what I’m talking about after the first two weeks.
Tip #7: Invest In A Facial Steamer
I mean it, steaming your face is the golden ticket to glowing and hydrated skin. Check this one out from Amazon which is only $35 and includes a 10% coupon. Steaming your face opens up the pores. But what does that mean? What do I care? Well, it will make that amazing moisturizer that is your holy grail to work even BETTER and who wouldn’t want that? But, sometimes buying a facial steamer is way out of budget so if that sounds like you, this DIY will literally give you the same results!
- Put some water to a boil and make sure your skin is clear of any makeup or oils (so cleanse that face).
- Place a towel over your head as you lean over a pot of boiling water. Make sure no moisture or heat is escaping your little tent. Also, try not to get too close because it will be very uncomfortable for you.
- Relax and breathe for the next 5 minutes and watch as your face turns from pasty to glowing. And you just saved yourself so much money (which could have gone to the spa) so congratulate yourself for that 🙂
Tip #8: Drink Your Water
Notice how I didn’t say “drink your liquids”… This means just water. No juice, soda, smoothies, etc. Just water. Water is the healthiest drink for your skin; therefore, aim to drink 10+ cups a day. It flushes out all the toxins in your body and you will notice the dryness in your skin flaking away.
Perk: Pimples will shrink and be gone faster!
At the end of the day, your skin NEEDS its daily maintenance and these winter skin care tips will make your life so much easier.
