I am here to tell you that whatever post you see claiming to see results “overnight” is NOT telling you the truth. Hair growth takes its time. However, with the right products and changes, it is most definitely possible to see your hair grow. Just not “overnight” OR “in a week”.
Mistake #1: Washing Your Hair With Hot Water
Word on the street is: washing your hair with cold water is more beneficial for your hair than hot water.
Cold vs Hot Water Pros and Cons
Cold Water Pros | Scalp is hydrated. Closes pores. Hair is shinier. |
Cold Water Cons | Hair is flat. No volume. |
Hot Water Pros | Opens pores. Removes buildup of dirt and bad oils. |
Hot Water Cons | Hair is frizzy and dry. Too crazy. No moisture. |
So here’s how I do it.
- I start off washing my hair with LUKEWARM water (not scorching hot for obvious reasons).
- After rinsing the conditioner out, I transition to cold water to really seal in the moisture from the products I put into my hair (and it closes my pores)
Done.
Mistake #2: Washing Their Hair Every Day
No.No.No. Please stop this whole misconception where we need to wash our hair every day to be considered clean. Washing it every day strips the hair of its natural oils forcing the scalp to produce more oil (aka that greasy look!) Sure, your hair will look squeaky clean BUT you will continue to have greasy hair until you stop this madness. Try to limit yourself to 1-2 days at least. If your hair STILL looks presentable and manageable after 2 days, extend it.
Mistake #3: Detangling their WET hair with a BRUSH
First tip is to throw away the brush right now and invest in this tangle teezer hairbrush. If unknotting your hair seems like an impossible task, you obviously have not tried this life saver. It detangles your hair in seconds with no pulling and very MINIMAL hair loss. Like literally, I used to have the most unmanageable hair. I really thought there was no hope until I bought this. And no, no one paid me to write this. That’s how much I adore this little thing. Anyways, definitely do not brush your hair when it is wet. Haven’t you noticed how much more hair you lose when it is wet compared to when it’s dry? Why? This is when your hair is the weakest. The most fragile.
Mistake #4: Drying Your Hair With A Towel
Drying your hair with a towel is too harsh and will break your hair (unnecessary friction). However, using a 100% cotton t-shirt is much more gentle. Another bonus is that it will definitely minimize the frizz that comes with a towel. You will notice less hair loss and healthier locks sooner than later.
Mistake #5: Ignoring The Scalp
Massage your scalp 5-10 minutes daily for ultimate hair growth. But how could a massage make my hair grow longer? It stimulates blood flow which is important for hair production. Next.
Mistake #6: Tight Up-do’s
Tight hairstyles (yes, ponytails) stress out the scalp which aids in hair loss and breakage. Try to avoid these types of hairstyles. If you absolutely HAVE TO, protect your hair and scalp with oils and serums (not a lot, just a drop or two) and keep it a little loose. Also, major key. Throw out those thin, elastic hair ties (we all owned these at one point in our lives) because all they do is add more stress. Instead, use hair clips or satin scrunchies that are meant to protect the hair.
So there you have it. The dumbest mistakes you can make when trying to grow out your hair.
