Well, fall is almost here and with it comes a new season of skin care. With colder temperatures, the less sun you get, and increased environmental pollution leading to even older skin — your primary goal should be to keep your face glowing. Don’t worry, you won’t have to change your ENTIRE skin care regimen. Small, consistent changes daily are enough to produce results you’ll love! It is definitely possible to avoid the dry, patchy and itchy skin by incorporating a few of these simple fall skincare tips into your routine.
Use a humidifier.
If you haven’t already invested in a humidifier, now is the time to purchase one for the home. Humidifiers help moisture levels stay higher than they would without one. The air inside your home is drying out and it’s making your skin feel parched and itchy. If you have one running, it can add moisture to your room so you don’t get dry skin.
The best part about using a humidifier is that it doesn’t take up much space and could even help you save money on utility bills during this time of year!
The first thing you should do when using an air purifier is turn it on and let it run for at least 15 minutes before turning it off again. This will allow any dust or allergens to settle out before they can cause problems for you and your family’s health.
If you’re worried about how much water will come out when you run your humidifier, don’t worry! It’s safe to breathe the steam from this hot water into your lungs. It won’t hurt your furniture or home if you don’t need too much moisture. It is why most people only use them during the winter months.
Try a thicker moisturizer with SPF protection.
Moisturizing can help keep your skin hydrated by locking in moisture and keeping it from drying out. Apply moisturizer to clean skin twice daily, especially after washing with soap or showering. If you have dry skin, look for moisturizers that contain hyaluronic acid or ceramides — these ingredients are manufactured in the body and provide a natural source of moisture for your skin.
Moisturizing products with SPF protection often contain higher levels of active ingredients than non-SPF moisturizers. Use them during the day when you are out in the sun or exercising outdoors. For nighttime use only, apply a non-SPF moisturizer to lock in moisture overnight without causing more irritation or redness on your skin. Try an oil-free moisturizer for sensitive skin types (like acne prone), or if your skin is oily but doesn’t produce enough sebum naturally for its needs (this condition is called seborrhea).
Use moisturizers regularly during the fall and winter. Your body needs extra moisture in the winter because it’s colder out and your skin tends to be drier than usual. Why? Due to less oil production. If you don’t use moisturizers that contain emollients like vitamin E or lactic acid, you may experience dryness on your skin during these months.
Use an overnight mask.
Overnight masks are designed to do their best work overnight when there isn’t much else going on internally or externally. They’re formulated with ingredients like hyaluronic acid (which helps lock in moisture) or vitamin C (which helps boost collagen production). So they’re perfect for keeping your complexion hydrated and healthy as the temperature drops outside. Another reason these masks are great is because they don’t require you to wash them off before bed. What does that mean? It means you can use them right before bedtime and wake up with better-looking skin in the morning. Yep, they’re that cool.
I recommend using a hydrating mask to really help keep your skin hydrated overnight when the air is dryer than usual.
If you have oily skin, don’t use a clay mask. Try the hydrating mask instead. It won’t make your face look shiny.
Apply one before bedtime to let it work its magic while you sleep. You can use them once or twice a week, depending on how dry your skin is.

Stay hydrated.
Fall is a time when people may get dehydrated due to cooler temperatures and changing weather conditions. This can lead to dry skin and other health problems such as headaches and fatigue. To avoid these issues, make sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day.
The recommended daily intake for men is roughly 3 liters (about 13 cups) per day, while women should consume 2.2 liters (about 9 cups) each day. You probably already do this- but if you don’t, now is the time to start! Hydration is key for glowing skin year round, but especially during colder months when we tend to spend more time indoors under artificial lights rather than soaking up those natural rays from above!
Exfoliate.
Fall is a great time to exfoliate. The cooler weather and shorter days mean that our skin isn’t as hydrated as it was in the summer, so extra exfoliation will help slough off dead skin cells and keep our faces looking bright. In the fall, it’s especially important to exfoliate because of all the dryness, dead skin cells and dirt that can build up on your face. Dry weather causes your pores to shrink, so they get clogged easily. And when they’re clogged, dirt and oil can build up inside them, which can lead to acne breakouts. Exfoliation helps eliminate these impurities before they cause any damage to your skin.
The best exfoliators for dry skin are those made with natural ingredients like yogurt or milk powder. They contain lactic acid that will gently lift away dead cells from your face without drying it out further.
Eat healthier foods.
Eat healthy foods because skin care starts from the inside out. What you eat has a direct impact on how your body functions, which affects how well your skin looks. Eating fruits, vegetables and whole grains is essential for healthy skin, as these foods provide antioxidants that protect against free radicals that cause aging. Antioxidants also help fight inflammation, which can lead to acne breakouts.
- Eat lots of watery fruits and vegetables. Many fall foods are rich in water, including apples, pears, celery and cucumbers. In addition to being delicious, these foods are high in vitamins A and C, which help keep your skin healthy.
- Add cinnamon to your diet. Cinnamon may not seem like a typical autumn food, but it’s actually one of my favorite ways to add flavor to fall dishes. It helps keep blood sugar levels stable too!
- Eat pumpkin seeds. Pumpkin seeds are an excellent source of zinc (which helps keep skin smooth) as well as omega-6 fatty acids (which help reduce inflammation). They’re also very easy to incorporate into your diet — just sprinkle them on salads or oatmeal!
Invest in a really good facial oil.
Use a facial oil to keep your skin healthy and hydrated in the fall. Oils help prevent dryness and keep your skin soft and supple. They also contain antioxidants that protect against free radicals caused by pollution, stress, sun exposure and aging. I recommend using oils at night because they can leave an oily residue on your pillowcase if you use them in the morning. AND you won’t have to go out looking like a slug lol! Some good options are jojoba oil, argan oil or macadamia nut oil. You can also try mixing one or two drops with the moisturizer and then lightly massage it in.
Though the changes in temperature during the fall can change how our skin looks, it doesn’t mean we should stop taking good care of ourselves. These six simple tips can help you embrace all that this wonderful season has to offer while ensuring you still maintain your glowing skin. There is no time like the present to start making a positive change at home that will leave your skin healthy no matter what the weather has in store.
