Applying skincare products in the correct order is one of the most important steps in CREATING a skincare routine. If applied too early, the skin’s natural barrier is more prone to damage; if applied too late, makeup and dead skin cells can be harder to remove. Building that routine can be an overwhelming task especially when there are so many products and creams to try. Where do you even start? What is the best product for my skin? Building a good skincare regimen is more than just purchasing a bunch of products. Skincare routines need to be built with a specific order in mind so that it works for you and your skin type. With the right one, you can turn back the clock and give your skin a youthful glow that looks great on your face.
Skincare Routine For Beginners Steps:
1. Start with a clean face.
This means remove makeup with makeup remover before trying this. You should be washing your face at least once a day (skin type pending). Rinse your face with warm water and apply a cleanser suited for your skin. If you don’t know where to start, La Roche-Posay is my holy grail. Cleansers remove dirt, grime and bacteria that has been accumulating on your face throughout the day or night while sleeping. Massage your face with the cleanser in a circular motion for at least 60 seconds. Rinse your face with water removing all the gunk. Lastly, pat face dry with cotton towel GENTLY. No harsh rubbing!

2. Apply serum.
Water-based serums are to be applied before moisturizer. Apply oil-based serums after moisturizer. Night time is perfect for serum application. Hyaluronic acid is great for hydration while Vitamin C improves dull and uneven skin tones.

3. Apply eye cream.

4. Moisturize.
Using a good moisturizer is key for reducing skin problems. There are many benefits that include anti-aging, hydrated skin and supple skin. Keep an eye out for moisturizers with SPF 30 or higher. And for the love of god, don’t fall for the fragrance trap. The “fragrance trap” is when a brand entices you to buy their product by making it smell appealing and rich. Fragrances cause flare ups and we want to avoid that at all costs. I’ve been using La Roche-Posay’s moisturizer for years and I swear by it. It’s linked below. Super lightweight. If your skin is oily or more acne-prone, this step still applies to you. Without moisturizer, oily skin can become dehydrated. To compensate for the lack of moisture, the skin will produce more oil. Look for moisturizers that won’t clog pores. They’re usually labeled, “noncomedogenic”.
5. Sunscreen.
It’s the last step but the most important. I don’t care if you don’t follow the other 4 steps but this is so important. Protect your skin from the sun DAILY. Sunscreens protect against skin cancer and aging. Aim for some that include SPF 30+. Yes, still apply if it’s raining or cloudy or snowing, etc. Not a hot day at the lake or beach. If you’re on a budget and money is an issue, many moisturizers come with SPF. No need to buy two products. My favorite one by far is the one linked below.
A good skincare routine is a must in anyone’s life when they want to look and feel their best for longer. Start that skincare regimen and treat it with respect. Discover what your skin type is.
Here’s a rule of thumb for discovering your skin type:
Dry Skin: dry, patchy skin that feels tight.
Oily Skin: shiny skin with an excess of oil.
Sensitive Skin: painful, red and blotchy skin.
Combination Skin: A mixture of oily and flakey skin.

Anti-aging doesn’t have to be expensive. The key is to incorporate a variety of products into your routine and staying consistent.
Don’t get discouraged if you don’t wake up the next day with smooth, magical skin. We’ve all been there. I used to give up on the skincare routine after 3 days because my skin was still dull and lifeless. In my mind, I wasted $100 on garbage products. I felt like a fool! It wasn’t until 6 weeks later that I started seeing the results I desperately wanted THAT first day!
I did some research and yes, it is recommended to give the products 6 or more weeks to do their thing. Steer clear of products that promote instant results after 2 days. Don’t switch products. Learn to be patient. The only exception to this is if the product causes some sort of allergic reaction. If that is the case, stop immediately.
