Getting enough beauty rest is a gold mine for a healthy and happy life. If you don’t sleep, you wake up cranky. If you wake up cranky, your productivity rate will go lower and lower. Imagine falling asleep at 2 am when you have to be up by 6 am? That’s enough to irritate me and start my day on the wrong foot. Sadly, there are lots of people in the world who have a hard time falling asleep but what is to blame? Well, let’s figure that out right now with these 8 tips to fall asleep quicker!
I find that the biggest problem in today’s society is the lack of importance the public gives sleep. They truly believe they are capable of performing their best running on little sleep (as long as they have caffeine). That might be true; however, this is not the best solution in the long run. The two major factors (that I personally believe) that prevent us from getting the most hours of sleep is a heavy work schedule and social media.
I’ll admit, pulling all nighters when I was younger and going to school wasn’t the hardest thing in the world. But you get older. And your body can’t function the same way it used to when you were 15 or 16, sadly. Which brings me to tip #1…
Create A Routine
Wake up at the same time every single day. And go to sleep at the same time every day (not at 2 AM!). Try to aim no later than 10:30 PM to keep your natural circadian rhythm in check. 8 or more hours of sleep every day is essential to a productive day. If you can squeeze more in, the better for you! I have the bedtime app on my phone which alerts me when it is time to sleep and it is a life-saver since I tend to forget to look at the clock. Oops! With time and dedication, the body will soon know when it is time to shut the body down for some rest.
Keep The Room Dark and Quiet
This is a major one. Turning off all blue light electronics (TV’s, laptops, computers, tablets) a half hour before bedtime activates melatonin production in your body which is a key factor for sleep. Try swapping your see-through curtains for some black out curtains like this one which block out the lights that peek from outside.
Lower The Room Temperature
Be honest with yourself. How many times in your life have you fidgeted in bed for hours because the room is too hot or too cold? I am SO guilty of this until I found out that the perfect temperature for sleep is between 60-75 degrees Fahrenheit. It is tempting to raise that temperature to 80 degrees during those cold winter months but just don’t. Our body’s internal temperature goes down when we relax; therefore, our environment needs to change with our body.
Listen To White Noise
White noise blocks out those disturbing noises that cause a distraction for you. This is a great proven way to fall asleep quickly. If white noise isn’t something for you, try a smooth jazz playlist. This is 2020 where there are playlists all over the internet so go pick one and watch as sleep slowly takes over your body.
Masturbate
This may be TMI but I’m not a sugar coater. It works. And it works AMAZING. Releasing those endorphins WILL knock your whole body out. But it only works if you climax. This tip is so great because it helps you relax and stop thinking for a minute which is so hard to do nowadays. So get into bed and treat yourself! This is nothing to be ashamed of. Millions of people do it. Seriously, look it up.
Avoid Napping
You know who needs to nap? Newborns, toddlers, little children and cats. You are not any of those things. At least, I think? You are tired throughout the day and I know how hard it is to fight it…but this is just one of those things you can’t do. Do not get some shut eye during the day to make up for not sleeping the night before. Save all of that for the night time when you will truly appreciate it more.
Relax Your Body
I truly mean R E L A X. Relax everything in your body. Lay facing the ceiling, arms at your side, legs spread out. Try to concentrate on your breathing and picture a relaxing scenario in your mind. When you remove all those constant overthinking thoughts with a calm picture, the brain has no space for all that negativity. Put all of your primary focus on de stressing your body starting from the top → down. Wiggle your toes and fingers. Shake all the stress away. Once your done shaking gently, lay still. Breathe. Picture that scenario. And relax every body part. You should be asleep in two minutes! This is a proven way to fall asleep and also my personal go-to.
Journaling
Writing down your thoughts and worries before going to bed is a new technique that many people are adding to their nighttime routines. At first I didn’t understand the hype, but after trying it for a whole week, I found myself resting… better? Not waking up… as tired? It’s as if all those worries I thought about … stayed on that paper? They were out of my head which is exactly where they needed to be when I was trying to fall asleep.
Aren’t you tired of going to bed only to fall asleep hours later? Tired of going down the Youtube rabbit hole because you are just not tired?
Well that ends now.
